Tips to Try
Tips for God Smiles
told by Dodie Davis
I LOVE telling this story. The more I tell it the better I like it. It seems to appeal to people of every age group.
Here are some tips that may help you tell the story.
- This story has two main characters – a young girl and an army captain. When I tell the story, I soften my voice slightly when I am Rebekah, but take on a slightly deeper, more brusque tone for Namaan. These are not drastic voice changes, but just enough to help people picture the person.
- The main truth in this story is that God is greater than any opposition we might face in this present world. I have a secondary truth I hope comes out through the telling of this story. It is that God is pleased with those who are strong in their faith, as well as those who are taking their first tentative steps of faith.
- There are a lot of contrasts in this story. Pauses are an effective tool to show these contrasts. There is:
- the anger of the King of Syria vs. the servants afraid to talk
- the confused milling Syrian soldiers vs. the angelic host poised for battle
- Elisha’s calm manner vs. Gehazi’s terror
- King of Israel’s judgment vs. Elisha’s request for grace
I hope you enjoy telling this story as much as I do.
